What is SEO? How organic search optimisation works
SEO helps search engines understand your website and helps customers find it. See what organic search optimisation involves and what is best avoided.
SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is the work of helping a search engine find, understand, and usefully present your website to a person with a specific question. It is neither buying rankings nor a collection of tricks. It combines useful content, orderly structure, sound technical foundations, and a reputation that has to be earned.
Organic search optimisation cannot honestly guarantee a particular position. What it can create is an asset that remains after the work ends: pages that answer real customer questions, logical links between them, and fewer errors that stop either a search engine or a user from reaching an answer.
What SEO has to do with your business
SEO begins with intent, not a phrase. Someone searching for “what is RAG” wants to understand a concept. Someone asking about “RAG implementation in a company” is evaluating a solution and a provider. Both queries may concern the same technology, but they should not lead to the same generic page.
SEO's task is to match the answer to the decision stage:
- an article explains a concept or helps take a first step;
- a service page shows when it is worth commissioning the work and what it includes;
- a case study or evidence-led resource helps assess competence;
- links guide the reader to the next question instead of leaving them at the end of a dead-end paragraph.
That is how traffic emerges that has a chance of turning into a business conversation. A high number of visits from people looking for something other than what you offer is not an SEO success.
When SEO is the right investment - and when it is not
SEO is a good channel when customers regularly search for the problem you solve and the company can offer a better answer than a generic directory of services. It works especially well for services that require comparison, products with a longer buying process, and questions that recur in sales conversations.
It should not always receive the first budget, however. Improve the offer or sales process first if:
- you do not yet know who you sell to or which outcome you sell;
- every engagement is so different that you cannot identify a shared audience problem;
- you need demand for a one-off event taking place in a few days;
- the website attracts the right visits, but enquiries are lost through no response, slow contact, or unclear pricing.
In those situations, SEO will not repair the business model. It may increase visits, but it will not remove friction in the offer. With a short deadline, a limited paid test is often more sensible; we describe the difference in our guide to SEM, SEO and PPC.
What organic search optimisation consists of
In practice, there are four layers. You do not have to improve them all at once, but neglecting one can limit the impact of the others.
| Layer | Control question | Example work |
|---|---|---|
| Indexing and technical foundations | Can a crawler find the page, render it, and read the correct URL? | sitemap, canonicals, redirects, performance, correct headings, and mobile version |
| Content and intent | Does the page answer the precise question that brought the visitor here? | clear title, answer at the beginning, complete structure, and current examples |
| Information architecture | Is the topic connected to related pages without duplicating the same text? | pillar page, satellite articles, descriptive internal links, and one URL for one intent |
| Credibility | How does the reader know who stands behind the content and why to trust it? | author, sources, documented experience, and updates to outdated claims |
Google itself describes SEO as helping the search engine understand content and helping users find a website and decide whether to visit it. Start with the SEO Starter Guide, not with a list of supposed ranking factors.
What “good content” means in SEO
Good content is not created to repeat a phrase the right number of times. It is created so the reader does not have to search for a second article after reading the first.
Before publication, check three things:
- Does the answer arrive immediately? The first two or three sentences should answer the question in the title, not explain that the topic is important.
- Does the page add something of its own? It may be a design decision, an example, a process description, a comparison of conditions, or a clearly explained limitation. Summarising five other pages does not create value.
- Can the claims be defended? A number without a source, an outdated tool recommendation, and marketing certainty undermine the entire text — including its strong parts.
This approach follows Google's current principle: content should primarily help people, be reliable, and add value beyond merely rewriting other material. The people-first content guidance is a much better checklist than “keyword density.”
On-page and off-page: what remains useful about the distinction
The distinction between on-page and off-page SEO is useful as long as it is not reduced to a list of tricks.
On-page covers what is on your website: text, titles, semantic headings, image descriptions, links, speed, and the way it works on a phone. The central question is: does the user receive a clear answer without obstacles?
Off-page means signals beyond the website — above all mentions, links, and recognition earned because someone considered the material valuable. You do not build them with forum comments or by publishing text at scale in random places. Those practices do not create trust; they can look like link manipulation. A better investment is material someone genuinely wants to reference in their own publication, presentation, or answer to a client.
SEO and AI-generated answers
Visibility in AI answers is not a separate channel that replaces SEO. Google states that AI Overviews and AI Mode are subject to the same basic requirements: the page must be indexed, available to the crawler, and useful to people. There is no additional file or special schema that, by itself, ensures inclusion. AI features and your website
It is still worth writing so that an important passage can be understood when lifted out of the full article. One question per section, a definition at the beginning, a source beside a current figure, and a clear distinction between fact, opinion, and your own experience all help. We combine that editing approach with SEO in our AI content ops service.
How to measure SEO results without confusing traffic with sales
Set up measurement as a funnel, not a one-number contest. Visibility answers whether a search engine is showing the page. Behaviour after the visit tells you whether the answer matches intent. Only then do enquiries, qualification, and sales demonstrate business value.
| Stage | Signal | Control question |
|---|---|---|
| Visibility | impressions for the right URLs and queries | Are we reaching the problems we genuinely solve? |
| Visit | clicks and CTR analysed alongside the result content | Does the title promise what the page actually delivers? |
| Engagement | move to an offer, form use, or resource download | Does the reader have a natural next step? |
| Business | worthwhile conversations and revenue attributed to the source | Does the traffic attract the customers we want to serve? |
Do not judge a change after a few days or solely by average position. First record the baseline, the scope of the improvement, and the expected signal; then compare similar periods. That is how you distinguish the effect of new content from seasonality, a single mention, or a random traffic spike.
How to begin working on SEO
Do not begin by rebuilding the whole website or publishing ten texts at once. First decide which questions and services the company wants to be known for. Then:
- check that important pages are indexed and have one preferred URL;
- review the queries that already show your pages in Search Console — including the less obvious ones;
- choose one pillar page and several supporting topics instead of many near-identical posts;
- improve the closest problem: a missing answer, weak title, outdated facts, poor linking, or a technical error;
- compare the data over time with the earlier period, not with a single day.
The Search Console Performance report lets you connect queries with URLs and find pages with high impressions but low CTR — a useful starting point for improving the title, description, or the content's fit with intent. Performance report documentation
